Diz paints in series. An early series was based on James Joyce's
Ulysses (right) and was bought by a prominent Irish collector and today hangs on one of the gallery walls of Cork University.
Other works are themed on issues as diverse as "The Nice Clean Game" of cricket, the oppression of indigenous peoples and the Spanish bullfight in the series "Fields of Blood".
A current series - Oscar Wilde's
"De Profundis", the letter written in Reading Jail to his lover and his descent into sadness and isolation. We have here a triptych of The
"Portrait of Dorian Gray", the yearning for youth and fear of age.
"Adam & Eve" are expelled from Eden by an angry God and Eve forever blamed.. and the realities and fantasies of women both the famous like her
Salome, Billie Holiday,
Marilyn Monroe and the unsung
, caged women struggling to be free. There is the joy of love in the etchings
"The Song of Songs". None of her paintings instruct the viewer on how they should think or react. They are created to help the viewer consider the issues visually presented, what Diz calls the
"dumb song", to feel and imagine in your own particular way.
